ELVES Podcast Featuring Elena Wrelton

In this weeks discussion we spoke to Elena Wrelton who is the Environmental Compliance Manager at ELVES (ELV Environmental Services CLG) the compliance scheme for End-of-Life Vehicles.

Her role focuses on the recycling operations side of the organisation including the Authorised Treatment Facility network, and the organisation’s Electric ELVES programme.

Prior to joining ELVES, she worked for a number of years at the Ministry of Environment in New Zealand working on a range or waste and resource management issues including the operation of waste policy (waste disposal levy, voluntary and mandatory product stewardship, waste advisory board), the implementation of a nationwide take back scheme for televisions, and funding for waste and environmental projects.

ELVES is the approved End-of-Life-Vehicle (ELV) compliance scheme for Ireland. ELVES is funded by its Producer members, new and used vehicle importers.

The ELVES Network of recycling facilities consists of over 60 Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATFs) all around the country. These permitted scrap yards will take back your old car or small van for free (you may even receive money for it), will issue you with a Certificate of Destruction, ending your responsibility and will then recycle your vehicle. Over 75% of Certificates of Destruction issued in Ireland are done so through ATFs in the ELVES Network.

In this podcast,  Elena runs us through the day to day operations of ELVES while also discussing what some of the challenges have been for her and her colleagues since the outbreak of Covid-19.

In the latter stage of the podcast, Elena offers her opinions on what the future may hold for authorised treatment facilities and for the industry as a whole.
