FTA Ireland (FTAI) has launched its TruckSafe Green Standard to reinforce FTAI members’ commitment, and that of the wider logistics sector, to helping achieve Ireland’s climate change targets.
FTAI’s TruckSafe Standard has a 10-year record of providing on-site audits and implementation of industry-led best practice procedures, to help reduce emissions and improve the industry’s impact on the environment. Developed by FTAI members, the businesses which move the goods and services Irish industry requires every day, the standard aims to recognise, encourage and promote compliance and best practice in the operation of heavy goods vehicles. It also acknowledges the efforts of those organisations operating at the highest levels with its Silver and Gold levels, for which FTAI members must have the systems in place to ensure safe, legal and sustainable operations.
The addition of the TruckSafe Green Standard will now provide independent verification for those companies that have systems in place that are aimed at reducing the impact their operations have on the environment, such as carbon reduction policies and fuel saving measures.

“Achieving the Green Standard recognition is based on active participation in fuel management programmes, which must be evidenced by quarterly uploads of fuel performance data, as well as an annual action plan signed by a business’ CEO. And, while the FTAI TruckSafe Standard has always included environmental measures, the introduction of the Green Certificate as part of the process is timely, as it also recognises compliant and professional commercial fleet operators looking to transition to alternative fuels such as compressed natural gas (CNG), liquified natural gas (LNG) and electric.”
Celebrating the first company to achieve Green Standard recognition, Kathryn Kennedy, Corporate Services Manager at FTAI comments: “We are delighted to be in a position to launch this unique Green Standard for commercial fleet members of FTAI. We would like to express our congratulations to the team at BWG Foods, one of Ireland’s leading retail and wholesale operators, which has become the first business in Ireland to attain this standard. BWG Foods has demonstrated excellence in delivering a consistent approach to reducing their emissions through their transition to run the largest alternatively fuelled (CNG) fleet in Ireland and a significant reduction of kilometres driven by their fleet following the ongoing route optimisation project.”
